I want to write a little Blog on Hot Stones Massage today. A lot of people do not understand how this all works. As we move into Autumn and Winter where Hot Stones treatments are most popular, I want to tell you a little more about The Hot Stones as they are an amazing natural heated tool to use for massage and is a very popular treatment for bodywork.
Hot Stones are made from polished Volcanic Rock. They are polished and smoothed so that may be used as massage tools. This goes back centuries. The Native American Indians started this in sweat lodges where heat was used for purification and cleansing purposes. Polished volcanic stones were then used for massage afterwards and during the sweat lodge ritual. Today the use of Hot Stones in modern bodywork allows heat penetration deep into the muscles, so that the deep layer of muscles can be worked on more effectively and quickly. The heat is deeply relaxing. Trigger point stones can be used for Trigger Point Release on adhesions (knots in the body). It is a very effective and relaxing massage technique, but gets into the really deep layers of the muscles too. For the not faint of hearted, there is also Hot and Cold Stones Massage Therapy or Geothermal Therapy. The Cold Stones are made from polished marble. The stones are used in combination, alternating together. The Hot and Cold of the stones used during massage causes the muscles to flush out fast and this is how geothermal therapy occurs so effectively. Geo, meaning Earth/Stone (geology), and thermal meaning temperature (thermometer), defines Geothermal stone therapy as treatment with stones and temperatures. It causes faster blood flow to flush the muscles with fresh blood and elimination of toxins, allowing faster muscle release and recovery. The usual Deep Tissue work and digging into muscles is greatly decreased, and the time which it takes to release stubborn knots is also decreased, allowing the therapist more time to get to address stubborn knots and make greater progress during sessions. Because of the softening effect that the hot and cold stones have on the client's muscles and the anti-inflammatory effect, the tight knots can then melt like ice, Stones provide so much more than just physical comfort for your client. Placing warm belly stones and hand stones and tucking stones around your client helps them to feel safe and grounded. When someone comes in for a massage, they often feel in a vulnerable position anyway. Perhaps they are worried it will be painful. Hot Stones is rarely a painful treatment, but is deeply detoxifying and effective, The stones help clients to feel more secure and protected. Warm stones placed on and around the body help your client to stay relaxed during the session, even when you are working a little deeper trying to relieve their tight spots.

I studied advanced Aromatherapy for a year as part of my degree and professionally qualified in it as an Aromatherapist and then combined that knowledge with my learning in the Homeopathy, Herbal Medicine and Organic Chemistry modules, I was hooked. I spent hours researching essential oils, obsessed about sources of oils, purity and where to get my organic oils from. Smelling away and researching therapeutic properties endlessly. I realized it was Flowers, Trees, Plants and Herbs from which the essential oils are produced that worked so naturally on a very powerful, energetic, vibrational level and also working deep in the body on a cellular level in harmony with our own natural Organic Chemistry down to a molecular level. It became intensely interesting and a profound obsession for me and made me want to research deeper into Aromatherapy and how it works on our brains and bodies. Aromatherapy is an ancient therapeutic practice dating back to ancient Egypt where egyptians learnt how to distill and macerate the oil from flowers, herbs and trees to produce essential oils and then use them for all kinds of therapeutic and aromatic purposes. The trade today in essential oils is worldwide with consignments passing between France, China, Brazil, Bulgaria, Turkey, Saudi Arabia, Ethiopia, Indonesia, The US, Australia, USSR, Israel, Spain, Egypt, Britain, Thailand, Java, Guatamala, Somalia amongst other places. Purity, source and origin are very important factors these days for full therapeutic effect as a lot of cheap synthetic copies flood the market. My favourite at the moment is the High Altitude Organic Lavender which is handpicked and hand harvested on the mountains of France. A beautiful top note and an oil that can be used on pretty much any client, blended or otherwise. Sandalwood is another favourite of mine, however now the beautiful sandalwood trees in the Mysore region of India are endangered and the oil production from these 200 year old trees has now been stopped. Now ethical farming of sandalwood trees is happening in Australia to produce ethical sandalwood essential oil - as ancient Indian Sandalwood is regarded as rare and unethical to buy now. It was amazing, worth more than gold Aromatherapy Oils and their Organic chemical compounds work with our cells and organs to naturally stimulate healing and repair damaged tissues, organs, cells and stimulate the lymphatic and the immune system. It is amazing and the body takes in and then eliminates these oils after about 12 hours or so after your massage. The Limbic system in the brain also responds to the Aromas and produce sedative effects to relax you. Essential oils have been used dating back some 5000 years in Egypt, but it became popular in Europe in the 1900's where the French Apothecary using essential oils came about. The french physician Dr Jean Valnet followed the research of french chemist Dr Gatefosse - who coined the name Aromatherapy which is used today. Dr Valnet used essential oils for the treatment of war injuries during World War II to disinfect and heal. He in turn published a book in 1964 called 'Aromatherapie, Traitement des Maladies par les Essence des Plantes' . I am trying to find this book now. Hope its not all in French! One day I will write a book myself, that is how much I love it.. Doing massage work and being enabled to donate a percentage to charity is one of the most fulfilling ways I have had of working as a massage therapist over the years I have been practicing. I have worked alongside a team of therapists at The Mount Haven Healing Room for quite a number of years now. Until July 2016 we were working in the 'charity based' spa room at the hotel inspired and run by Orange Trevillion. Orange set up the Therapy Room so that the hotels percentage of what was earned from the therapies at The Mount Haven went direct to her chosen charity supporting a School and Home for Children in Puttaprthi, Andra Pradesh, India to help abused children living in extreme poverty in India. As a therapist I feel very honoured to be part of this work and being given the opportunity to fulfill therapy work at the hotel and for Orange to donate the hotels percentage profit to charity in order to support this cause.
A Letter from Orange about The Children's Project Charity, India "15 years back when I was visiting India every year in the closed season I was very moved by the very terrible circumstances many of the street kids were having to survive in. And I mean survive, not live. It was not a childhood lived as we would know it. Dirty, scrofulous, exhausted, hungry; they plied the streets to beg for money for either alcoholic or drug addicted or mentally challenged parents. Buying them the powdered milk or biscuits they asked for if you refused to give money only meant they sold them back for a fraction to the same shopkeepers. They probably sold the same tin of milk powder 20 times a day. I used to take them and buy a meal and make them sit and eat it to make sure it didn't go to their parents or handlers. I got a phone call later that day from a friend. She asked if she could tell me about a home and school being run by some American friends. I was very impressed. They were brought up in their own religion, Hinduism and with that a knowledge and love for all faiths and all peoples. Safe, well fed and educated. A home with love all around them. It grew from 4 children originally to 32 and every year I visited and saw their progress and little bright faces. I will never forget knocking on the door when I arrived yearly to great glee and laughter and love. So from that day I met these children, we decided that all profits from the Spa at the hotel would go to help fund the care of these kids. And they have done us proud. Most have grown up now. Many of the oldest have jobs with Ana insurance in Banglalore, the younger ones at college or university. Maheshwari is studying in Dublin and I've visited her twice now and continue to help her expenses. 2 of the other girls are at University in California. Other friends from around the world also have been supporting the project for years. We also used the funds to help a Tibetan community of monks with many orphans in South India and paid for medical camps in tribal villages. I went out on these a few times and what an eye opener. We do not know how lucky we are in many respects' Orange Trevillion, 2017 One day I hope to work in a similiar capacity raising money through my massage work for a Children's Charity. It is a very rewarding career and it takes me all over Cornwall to some of the most beautiful locations. The freedom it gives me allows me to get the best of both worlds, exploring and enjoying the Cornish environment and doing the work I love. It is not easy and it is hard work, and you really have to look after yourself to sustain this work and you have to love it and I do! All my adult life I have mostly lived in the big cities in the corporate world, a bit of a soul destroyer when I look back at my old awful lifestyle, working all hours, not looking after myself and generally burning the candles at both ends, just to get that ad produced on time. Not very fulfilling. When I moved back to Cornwall, I knew I would have to make some sacrifices and I did, but after years of hard work and building my practice I now have the life I want, whizzing around Cornwall with my mobile spa and working out of beautiful treatment rooms literally right on the sea. As long as I am near the sea I am a happy therapist. So I have learnt that the Cornish lifestyle is a beautiful place to be, you have to work hard and love what you do and be passionate about it in order to make this place work for you. I love it here on this Cornish little island and I wouldn't change my life here for the world.
